General Care Of Your Cut tropicals
Follow these healthful hints - Unpack the flowers immediately.
To care for your beautiful Hawaiian flowers, unpack your flowers
immediately. Trim up to 1/2" off the stems with a sharp utility
knife - never use a scissors.
Place flowers in a clean vase with clean water & a commercial
floral preservative.
Flowers should be cut at an angle. The angle prevents the stem
ends from lying flat and adhering to the bottom of the container,
a position that would slow the stem's water uptake. Here are
a few flowers that should be cut at a slant: Anthuriums, Orchids,
Proteas and Tropicals.
Most tropicals will have up to a 2 week vase life. Vase
life can run longer if the flowers are maintained in a humid
environment at a temperature below 70oF.
Avoid displaying the flowers in direct sun, close to heat
sources or in a cold drafty area and avoid temperatures below
45oF.
If your Gift Pack Includes Cut Orchid Sprays, such as dendrobium
or oncidium, and appear wilted upon unpacking, simply submerge
whole sprays for 10 to 15 minutes in cool tap water.
Note: All cut flowers and especially Orchid Sprays are slightly
sensitive to ethylene gas and exposure will cause premature
aging of blooms - Keep away from ripening fruit, attatched garages,
Etc.
To avoid ethylene buildup, you'll want to ensure
adequate ventilation and sanitary conditions.
These tropical treasures will stay their loveliest
when held in water and at 50 to 55 degrees F. Holding tropicals
for more than a week at temperatures below 45 degrees can cause
blooms to discolor or drop.
Recut stems once or twice per week. Use clean water
-- with or without a floral preservative. Keep flowers away from
heat sources.; Avoid temperatures below 45 degrees F.
